How do I speed up my download?

If you have a large number of files you need to restore from the cloud, you might notice that the download is going slower than you expect, even if you have plenty of available bandwidth.

The Code42 app compresses and encrypts the files it uploads, so it needs your CPU power to decompress and decrypt your files when you restore them. In addition, CrashPlan for Small Business is a service you share with a multitude of other customers. We balance our bandwidth so that every user has equal access to their stored files. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the best download performance possible.

Prioritize your restore jobs

We recommend splitting up your restore jobs into smaller chunks based on priority rather than downloading your entire archive all at once. The more you download, the more time it takes.

You should plan out your restore jobs so you can work as efficiently as possible:

1. Identify a smaller set of recent, critical data that you need right away.
2. Prioritize restoring that data first in a smaller job.
3. Once it is restored, set up a restore job for another chunk of data that is less urgent.
4. Get back to work on your critical data while your less critical data is restored.

For example, if you have 1 TB of data, restore your most important 100 GB first. Having priorities and splitting up your restores allows you to work on your critical data faster while the rest is restoring.

Use a wired internet connection

When possible, plug your computer into your router with an ethernet cable and use this stable wired connection to restore your files, instead of a less stable Wi-Fi network.

Restore to a fast drive

When restoring to an external drive, use a modern USB 3.0 drive. Internal drives, especially SSDs, will always be faster to restore to than external drives.

Let it run

The Code42 app will resume restores automatically when a device is turned off and on again, but it won't be able to do any work while the device is off. The Code42 app also can't restore when the device is asleep. Change your computer's Energy settings so that the Code42 app can run your restores as long as possible.
